Sounds of Silence

The Eagles had a “quiet” day in the middle of the Free Agency legal tampering period. They signed wr Greg Ward and DB Andre Chachere to 1 year deals, and gave the lowest possible tender to Guard Nate Herbig. Ward is a hard working backup who lacks speed, but is smart and plays Special Teams. He is a good wide receiver to serve as the last one on a team’s depth chart. Chachere was a waiver pickup from Indy last year who played gunner on special teams for the Eagles and saw 56 defensive snaps as a backup at corner and safety. Herbig is a 23 year old workmanlike Guard who has gotten average starter grades from PFF, not bad for a 3^rd stringer! This performance earned him the tender, guaranteeing him 2.4 million dollars next year.

Eagles Lesson: A roster is 53 strong. Herbig and Ward have already contributed significantly from roles where they were at the back end of the roster. Sometimes “it takes a village.” Sometimes, it takes a team.

Battle of Birds- Better to be Lucky than Good- Eagles 20 Arizona 17

5-0. For the third time ever by an Eagles team (1981, 2004). By the skin on their chinny, chin, chin, the Eagles did just enough to win. Barely. Good fortune added to the favorable decision: The Good: The Eagles knew it’d be a long day at the office chasing around the ever elusive, athletic Kyler Murray, Arizona’s quarterback. They did that by maintaining a disciplined (stay in their lane) controlled rush. Murray did a great job getting the ball out quickly (tied for 4 th amongst NFL starting QB’s in getting the ball off from the pocket this week at 2.1 seconds). The combination of a controlled rush and Murray’s quick release meant the Eagles got just 1 sack this week. But the D-Line was there… 2.1 seconds is an excellent time by Murray releasing the ball (many attempts were actually under 2 seconds). A Placebo named Deebo

One of the NFL’s more exciting players, All Pro wide receiver Deebo Samuel, a multi-purpose explosive talent, is demanding a trade from the San Francisco 49ers. Samuel is a great player. Should the Eagles “execute the required procedure” to trade for Deebo? Oxford Languages defines PLACEBO this way: a harmless pill or… procedure prescribed more for the psychological benefit to the patient than for any physiological effect. a measure designed merely to calm or please someone. I have no doubt Deebo Samuel would truly have a positive “physiological effect” on the Eagles. Fact is, he’s a great player who would improve any team in the NFL. But he would not be the best answer to building this squad towards Super Bowl contender. The Eagles have a lot of holes. Derek Stingley Jr.

First round draft prospect Derek Stingley Jr. is a paradox. The LSU cornerback had an incredible freshman season, a clear top of the 1 st round talent even that young. But since… not so much. A combination of injuries and COVID have forced his stock down in this year’s NFL draft. Injuries have limited him to 10 games over 2 seasons since the 15 he played his freshman year. And based upon past performance, opposing offenses have shied away from attacking him, thus yielding less tape to evaluate: The Good (from his freshman tape): He had speed, quickness and recovery speed. He had great coverage technique in breaking with opposing receivers. He brought physicality and proper hand use in coverage. He was a playmaker… He had 6 interceptions.
