Cowboys – (Not so) Close is Good Enough

 

It is always a joy to see NFC Eagle Opponents having difficulty.  It appears this will not be a good free agency period for the Cowboys:

  • They lost a good player (wr Amari Cooper) per salary cap limitations & off field issues.
  • They lost a good player (OT La’el Collins) also per salary cap limitations & off field issues.
  • They lost a good player (wr Cedrick Wilson), again per salary cap limitations (notice a pattern on that).
  • They blew re-signing DE Randy Gregory via a late attempt to insert added language to his contract.

They did re-sign DeMarcus Lawrence, Michael Gallup and some lesser players to relatively team friendly deals.

Eagles Lesson: The Dallas Cowboys are 1 of only 5 teams in the NFL to not play in a conference championship game this millennium.  Much of this has to do with their combination of poorly managed free agency and their failure to recognize when to “push their chips in, and go for it.”  The Eagles are fortunate the Cowboys are as bad in Free Agency as they are good in the draft, applying their ongoing “hand grenade” approach (close is good enough) in free agency.  The remaining NFC East teams remain gratefully competitive in the division as a result.

  5-0.   For the third time ever by an Eagles team (1981, 2004). By the skin on their chinny, chin, chin, the Eagles did just enough to win.   Barely.   Good fortune added to the favorable decision: The Good: The Eagles knew it’d be a long day at the office chasing around the ever elusive, athletic Kyler Murray, Arizona’s quarterback.   They did that by maintaining a disciplined (stay in their lane) controlled rush.   Murray did a great job getting the ball out quickly (tied for 4 th amongst NFL starting QB’s in getting the ball off from the pocket this week at 2.1 seconds).   The combination of a controlled rush and Murray’s quick release meant the Eagles got just 1 sack this week.   But the D-Line was there… 2.1 seconds is an excellent time by Murray releasing the ball (many attempts were actually under 2 seconds).   Regardless, typically an Eagle D-Lineman was forcing pressure at the time the ball was released, clearly a quick pass rus...

A Placebo named Deebo

  One of the NFL’s more exciting players, All Pro wide receiver Deebo Samuel, a multi-purpose explosive talent, is demanding a trade from the San Francisco 49ers.   Samuel is a great player.   Should the Eagles “execute the required procedure” to trade for Deebo?   Oxford Languages defines PLACEBO this way: a harmless pill or… procedure prescribed more for the psychological benefit to the patient than for any physiological effect. a measure designed merely to calm or please someone.   I have no doubt Deebo Samuel would truly have a positive “physiological effect” on the Eagles.   Fact is, he’s a great player who would improve any team in the NFL.   But he would not be the best answer to building this squad towards Super Bowl contender.   The Eagles have a lot of holes.   For any team where Deebo is the “Cherry on the top” to help take a very good team to the Supe, that team should pursue him.   But for teams where the draft c...

Derek Stingley Jr.

  First round draft prospect Derek Stingley Jr. is a paradox.   The LSU cornerback had an incredible freshman season, a clear top of the 1 st round talent even that young.   But since… not so much.   A combination of injuries and COVID have forced his stock down in this year’s NFL draft. Injuries have limited him to 10 games over 2 seasons since the 15 he played his freshman year.   And based upon past performance, opposing offenses have shied away from attacking him, thus yielding less tape to evaluate: The Good (from his freshman tape): He had speed, quickness and recovery speed. He had great coverage technique in breaking with opposing receivers. He brought physicality and proper hand use in coverage. He was a playmaker… He had 6 interceptions. He was an All America cornerback in both 2019 and 2020 He’s the 2 nd highest ranked corner in this draft.   A good performance in his pro day on 4/6 could vault him to #1. The Bad: While he c...
